چکیده

The growth of the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) is forced mostly by buoyancy production at the surface. However, wind shear has a significant impact on the turbulence structure within the CBL and can contribute significantly to CBL growth when mean winds or wind shear in the lower atmosphere are strong and buoyancy flux from the surface and stratification in the free atmosphere above are both weak. Regimes of CBL growth in calm (shear-free), windy, and strong wind shear cases were studied using large eddy simulation (LES). The study evaluated the effects of shear on the CBL growth rate, the evolution of mean wind profiles within the CBL, and semi-organized and turbulent flow structures.

7.2 Dispersion in Atmospheric Convective Boundary Layer with Wind Shears: from Laboratory Models to Complex Simulation Studies

Convective boundary layers (CBLs) driven by buoyancy forcings from the bottom or/and from the top and capped by temperature (density) inversions are commonly observed in the lower portion of earth’s atmosphere (Holtslag and Duynkerke 1998). During fairweather daytime conditions, the buoyancy forcing in the boundary layer is primarily represented by convective heat transfer from a warm underlyin...

Numerical and Laboratory Study of Horizontally Evolving Convective Boundary Layer. Part II: Effects of Elevated Wind Shear and Surface Roughness

Modifications of turbulence regime in the sheared convective boundary layer (CBL) by a number of external nonbuoyant forcings are studied experimentally in a thermally stratified wind tunnel and numerically by means of large eddy simulation. This type of CBL is observed in the atmosphere when an originally neutral or stable air mass is advected over a heated underlying surface. Emphasis in the ...

Evaluation of Turbulence on the Dynamics of Monopile Offshore Wind Turbine under the Wave and Wind Excitations

In recent years, the use of offshore wind turbines has been considered on the agenda of the countries which have a significant maritime boundary due to more speed and stability of wind at sea. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of wind turbulence on the aero-hydrodynamic behavior of offshore wind turbines with a monopile platform. Since in the sea, the wind turbine structures ar...

Turbulence Spectra and Dissipation Rates in a Wind Tunnel Model of the Atmospheric Convective Boundary Layer

A model of the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) is realized in the thermally stratified wind tunnel of the Institute of Hydrology and Water Resources, University of Karlsruhe. Further experimental results from this model are presented. The wind tunnel with a test section 10 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 1.5 m high allows one to generate a quasi-stationary, horizontally evolving CBL, charac...

Gravitational, Symmetric, and Baroclinic Instability of the Ocean Mixed Layer

A hierarchy of hydrodynamical instabilities controlling the transfer of buoyancy through the oceanic mixed layer is reviewed. If a resting ocean of horizontally uniform stratification is subject to spatially uniform buoyancy loss at the sea surface, then gravitational instability ensues in which buoyancy is drawn from depth by upright convection. But if spatial inhomogeneities in the ambient st...
